Is Ford Transit Good for a Campervan Conversion?

Over the years of converting vans and taking them out on the road myself, I’ve found that the Ford Transit Custom is one of the most underrated gems out there.

It’s got everything you could want in a base vehicle. Solid build quality, loads of space, good driving comfort, and a fantastic platform for custom layouts.

In this blog, I’m going to share my honest experience with the Ford Transit Custom and why I think it deserves a lot more attention in the campervan world. From payload capacity and layout recommendations to fuel efficiency and potential drawbacks – I’ve got you covered.

So, let’s dive into what makes the Ford Transit Custom such a brilliant choice for campervan conversions (and when you might want to consider other models instead).

Why I Love Working with the Ford Transit Custom

Ford transit custom conversion

Over the years, I’ve worked on loads of Ford Transit Custom conversions, and honestly, they’ve become one of my favourite vans to convert. They just offer that perfect blend of practicality, comfort, and flexibility.

In my experience, the VW transporter always gets a lot of attention from vanlifers and the underdog models like the Ford Transit are overlooked! So, let me walk you through what I love about the Ford Transit Custom for a campervan conversion.

Internal space and load length

The first thing that makes the Ford Transit Custom stand out is the internal space. You’ve got a load length of around 2.55m in the short-wheelbase version and up to 2.92m in the long-wheelbase version (L2).

It gives you just as much, if not more, room to play with compared to a VW Transporter SWB (2.57m) or a Renault Trafic L1 (2.53m).

For clients, this means we can fit a proper kitchen setup, RIB bed, loads of storage, and still leave room for a comfortable lounge area.

I’ve done a few conversions recently for young families who wanted space to travel with two kids – and the L2 Transit Custom was perfect for that. I fitted custom under-bed storage, a compact side kitchen with integrated fridge and hob, and a large RIB bed that flips down in seconds.

My recommendations for Ford Transit Campervan layouts

Okay, so even though the ford transit offers plenty of internal space, it’s still a very compact van. Remember, you’re not converting a motorhome here!

So, you’ll have to be smart about what to include. Don’t try to cram too much in. Internal showers and toilets sound great in theory, but in a van this size, they tend to take up precious space that could be better used for living and storage.

The RIB bed setup is super popular with my customers for a reason. It’s so easy to convert, and it gives you two extra driving seats, which is ideal for families or groups of friends. So, in my experience, a RIB bed is better than a fixed bed if you can afford the upgrade.

My last layout tip is to maximise storage as much as possible with custom built solutions. I always recommend going with custom-built overhead cupboards, sliding pantry drawers in the kitchen, and under-bed lockers. Every inch counts.

Payload capacity

One thing people often overlook is payload capacity. Once you start adding cabinetry, a pop top roof, water tanks, electrics, and gear, that weight adds up fast.

The Ford Transit Custom has payload capacities of up to 1,350kg on some models, which is brilliant. Compare that to a VW Transporter, which can sit around 1,200kg for similar models, and it gives you a bit more freedom to load up without worry.

Reliability and build quality

I’ve taken Transit Customs on long trips around the UK and into Europe, and they’ve never let me down. They handle rough roads and long motorway stints with ease.

In my experience, they’re almost on par with VW Transporters for reliability. Obviously, the VW is a fair bit more expensive and most of the time with vans, you get what you pay for. But for the price, the Transit Custom is a really reliable build.

Availability of parts and accessories

Here’s a big one to consider – how much aftermarket support is available for the model? I always recommend vans with strong dealership networks and availability of parts. You don’t want to be stuck somewhere for days or weeks waiting on parts.

The Ford Transit Custom is a really popular model, and that means whether you need replacement parts or conversion accessories like pop-top roofs, it’s all easily available.

I’ve had clients come to me after struggling to find accessories for less common vans. With the Transit Custom, there are so many custom-fit accessories on the market, which makes the conversion not only easier but cheaper too.

Just keep in mind that some of the newer models come with advanced tech systems, and that can sometimes mean specialist maintenance – so be ready for that if you go for a top-spec model.

Fuel efficiency

If you’re planning big road trips, fuel economy is definitely something to keep in mind. In my experience, the Ford Transit is actually one of the most fuel efficient campervans around.

Of course, just how fuel efficient the van is will depend on the engine type you choose.

EcoBlue Diesel Engine

For a 2.0L EcoBlue Diesel Engine, expect around 6.6 L/100km. That’s pretty respectable for a van of this size and weight and is just slightly less than the consumption for VW Transporters and Renault Trafic diesel models.

In real-world camper setups, I’ve found it tends to sit closer to 7.5–8 L/100km depending on load and driving style. Just something to keep in mind when budgeting.

Hybrid engine

The PHEV model (combined petrol and electric) for a Ford Transit Custom is amazing on fuel. With this engine, you can enjoy an equivalent fuel consumption of around 3.5 L/100km.

One thing I will say is that depending on where you’re traveling, finding recharge stations can be tricky. But in my opinion, the extra hassle is totally worth the savings.

Things to Watch Out for with Ford Transit Conversions

The Ford Transit isn’t the best for maneuverability

One of the things I always tell clients to consider is the size of the Ford Transit Custom. Don’t get me wrong – the extra space inside is amazing for fitting in a proper kitchen, loads of storage, and a comfy sleeping area.

But on the flip side, that larger footprint can sometimes be a bit of a hassle, especially if you plan on using the van for city trips or squeezing down those narrow country lanes.

The long-wheelbase (L2) version in particular, which I love for giving more layout options, has a total length of around 5.34 metres. That’s great for space inside but can feel a bit unwieldy in tight car parks or older towns with narrow streets.

In my opinion, you’ll really notice it if you’re used to driving something like a VW Transporter SWB or a smaller Renault Trafic – both of which are just a bit more compact and easier to handle in tricky spots.

That said, Ford has done a decent job of making the Transit Custom easier to drive with features like front and rear parking sensors and a surprisingly tight turning circle for its size.

But if you’re nervous about driving larger vehicles or you know you’ll be doing a lot of city parking, it’s definitely worth thinking about whether you’d feel more comfortable in something smaller.

My recommendation

I always recommend doing a few test drives before committing, just to see how confident you feel behind the wheel.

In my opinion, if you’re planning more off-grid or rural adventures and want the space and comfort, then the Transit Custom absolutely delivers.

But, if your travels are mostly urban or involve navigating really narrow roads, I’d probably recommend a VW Transporter or a smaller Trafic.

Cost to convert

Now, I’d say the Ford Transit Custom sits bang in the middle when it comes to conversion costs. The van itself isn’t cheap, and there are some complicated systems in the newer models.

The good news is that there’s excellent aftermarket support, and most converters – myself included – know these vans inside out. That means we’re able to offer cheaper conversions than obscure models that need fully custom solutions.

A basic conversion might cost between £5,000 and £10,000. That would get you insulation, carpet lining, basic furniture, and a simple electrical setup.

If you’re looking for something mid-range with a pop-top roof, solar panels, and a decent kitchen, expect around £10,000 to £20,000.

And if you’re dreaming of a luxury conversion with high-end materials and custom-built features, you’re looking at anywhere from £20,000.

Who I recommend the Ford Transit for

I think it’s a fantastic option for families, couples, or solo travellers who want space and flexibility. The layout possibilities are endless, and if you like to get creative and hands-on with your design, this van’s a brilliant choice.

A Transit van is especially good for anyone who needs a high payload capacity and plans to carry plenty of gear or add features like solar panels, diesel heaters, or larger kitchen setups.

However, if you’re on a super tight budget, be aware of that initial cost and the potential maintenance expenses – especially with the newer models that have more advanced systems.

If you’re after the most affordable route with decent efficiency, the Vauxhall Vivaro could be the way to go.

Another thing to mention is that if brand prestige or resale value are your top priorities, I recommend looking at the VW Transporter instead.

Final Thoughts

After converting dozens of Ford Transit Customs over the years, I can honestly say they’re one of the most versatile and rewarding vans to work with. The space, flexibility, and driving comfort really do set it apart.

That said, it’s not for everyone. If you’re on a tight budget or want something super compact for city driving, there are other options out there that might suit you better.

But if you’re ready to invest in something durable, adaptable, and built to your exact needs, I genuinely think the Ford Transit Custom is a brilliant choice.
