VW T5 vs VW T6: Which Model is Best for Your Campervan Conversion?
When it comes to finding the best van to convert to a campervan, the VW Transporters tick a lot of the boxes. Over the years, I’ve transformed many of these vans into high-end, bespoke homes on wheels, making them perfect for hitting the road.
The VW T5 and T6 vans have a lot in common, but there are some key differences between the two that might help you decide which is the better fit for your needs. Let’s break down the main areas where these models differ: safety, technology, cost, and engine.
What is the difference between the VW T5 and VW T6?
Dimensions
When it comes to dimensions, the VW T5 and T6 are practically twins – they’re almost identical! Both models are roughly the same size, with a load length of around 2.5 metres (in the short wheelbase version) and about 2.9 metres if you go for the long wheelbase.
So yeah, whether you go T5 or T6, you’ll have plenty of room for your campervan conversion. Trust me, there’s no noticeable difference when you’re building out the interior. The main thing to remember is that while the dimensions are the same, it’s the extras that set the T6 apart!
Safety Features
Both the VW T5 and T6 come with solid safety features, but the T6 takes things up a notch. The T6 has more modern safety technology, like an emergency braking system and Driver Alert System, which monitors for signs of driver fatigue.
It’s small upgrades like these that make the T6 a bit more reassuring, especially if you’re planning on long road trips where safety should always be a priority.
From a conversion perspective, safety features like parking sensors and cameras are also easier to integrate into the T6. For clients who want that extra bit of reassurance on the road, the T6 is often the better choice.
But let’s not forget the T5 is no slouch either – it still comes with features like ABS and stability control, making it a solid option if safety is a concern, just without some of the more advanced tech.
Technology
When it comes to tech, the T6 pulls ahead again, but it’s more about refinement than revolution. The T6 comes with upgraded infotainment systems, which are great for long trips.
You’ve got options like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and touch screens with built-in sat-navs – these are either standard or optional depending on the model. These features aren’t just about entertainment; having integrated maps and music at your fingertips makes for a smoother, more enjoyable travel experience.
I’ve found that clients who are more tech-focused tend to lean towards the T6, as it’s easier to wire in and customise tech features during the conversion. The T5’s tech is a bit dated by comparison, but that also makes it a great choice for anyone looking for a simpler, more budget-friendly build without sacrificing too much in terms of functionality.
Cost
When we’re talking budget, the T5 is the clear winner. As an early 2000s model, there are plenty of second hand ones being sold at a very reasonable price. It’s been around longer, and you can usually pick up a used one for significantly less than a T6.
This can leave you with more money to spend on the actual conversion – and that’s where the magic really happens. I’ve worked on some incredible T5 conversions where clients saved on the van itself and put that extra budget towards high-quality materials, better appliances, or a more luxurious finish.
On the other hand, the T6, being a newer model, typically commands a higher price. But if you’re after the latest features, lower mileage, and a more up-to-date look, the extra cost might be worth it. It all depends on where you want to prioritise your spending – on the base van or the final conversion.
Engine
Both the T5 and T6 offer a range of engine options, and I’ve had the chance to work on conversions with both. The T5 engines are reliable workhorses, but they’re not as refined or efficient as the T6’s newer engines.
The T6 comes equipped with the new Euro 6 diesel engine, making it more efficient, eco-friendly and cheaper to run than the T5. If you’re planning to take your van on long-distance trips or want a bit more power for mountain roads, the T6’s engines are a solid upgrade.
That said, I’ve done plenty of conversions on T5s that are still going strong after years on the road, so it really comes down to how you plan to use your van.
Honestly, There Isn’t Much Difference…
So which should you choose for your conversion?
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option and are okay with slightly older tech, the VW T5 is a fantastic platform for a custom campervan. It’s a reliable, ergonomic van that won’t disappoint.
But, if you’re planning on long van trips, the fuel efficiency of the VW T6 might be worth the extra investment. It’s also worth repeating that the T6 is generally considered a safer van to drive because of the modern safety features, so I also recommend it for more anxious drivers and, of course, young families.
But to be honest, the difference between the VW T5 and T6 isn’t huge – they’re both great options. Because they are roughly the same size, the conversion will pretty much be the same for both of them.
My two cents is to focus less on choosing between van models and more on planning the conversion itself. Your time will be better spent deciding how you want to approach the build—whether you’ll tackle it as a DIY project or bring in an expert. You’ll also need to research reputable professionals, common mistakes to avoid, and design ideas. There’s a lot to consider.
