Best Road Trips UK
Do not miss these epic adventures in your converted campervan.
As someone who has travelled to nearly all parts of the UK in my VW T5 Campervan, both solo and with my family, I can say for sure that the UK is underrated for road trips.
Now, the best road trip for you here in the UK depends on who and how many people you’re travelling with and what youre into. From that you can make your own decision.
For me, it’s not just the road trip that makes it, it’s the set up you’re in too. Some road trips on the list just aren’t the same without some camper features. So make sure your camper is prepared to make the most out of all of these road trips.
Whether you’ve transformed a VW campervan, a Renault Trafic, a Ford Transit, or a Vauxhall Vivaro into your home on wheels, these road trips are perfect for your next adventure.
The North Coast 500 In Scotland
- Route: Starting and ending in Inverness
- Duration: 5-7 days in a campervan
- Distance: 516 miles
Now I’ll start with one of my all time favourites, a real classic to be honest. The North Coast 500 is a 516-mile scenic route around the northern coast of Scotland.
This journey is ideal for those with converted campervans who are looking for a mix of rugged landscapes and beautiful coastal views.
Along the way, you’ll encounter breathtaking coastal views, loads of historic castles, and small quaint fishing villages that have such strong Scottish culture which is just brilliant to experience.
I’d suggest stopping at John O’ Groats, Dunrobin Castle, and the pristine beaches of Achmelvich.

Now this is the UK, and the north of it at that. Getting a diesel heater installed is going to make your road trip a lot more enjoyable and comfortable to stay warm in the chilly Scottish climate.
You’ll want custom windows fitted that will allow you to check out the stunning views of this road trip, as this route is really known for its views so what’s the point of doing it if you can’t enjoy the views properly.
The Atlantic Highway, South West England
- Route: Devon to Cornwall
- Duration: 3-5 days in campervan
- Distance: 170 miles
This road trip is one I’ve done with my friends many times. We all absolutely love surfing so this route is perfect for anyone who is wanting to holiday along the coast and rode some waves while enroute.
When we aren’t surfing the waves there’s plenty of small towns and villages to explore, as well as huge cliffs and beach walks in the day. The food down here is great, with plenty of wonderful restaurants with excellent seaford.
For those who love exploring on foot, the Atlantic Highway offers some incredible cliff walks that are not to be missed.
Start with the South West Coast Path near Bude, where you can enjoy sweeping views of the Atlantic as you hike along the dramatic cliffs.
PS. The coast is famous for its fresh seafood. Try the fish and chips in Bude, the seafood restaurants in Newquay, and the local delicacies in Padstow.

Awning
Pop Top
Solar panels
Okay I’ve found that if you’re going anywhere with a beach in your camper you’re going to want a decent awning multi-rails installed.
It’s perfect for making a little base at your vehicle where you can dry off, take a break from the sun and have a cosy BBQ with friends. Awning rails make beach trips ten times better.
If you are on a beachside campsite that allows it, sleeping in a pop top conversion is the cherry on top of a beach day. Especially in the Summer down the southwest of England, nothing beats it.
Also having a pop top conversion will mean extra sleeping space and headroom, which will make your whole journey more comfortable, especially if you are going as a couple or family.
The Causeway Coastal Route, Northern Ireland
- Route: Belfast to Derry-Londonderry
- Duration: 2-4 days in campervan
- Distance: 120 miles
I feel like this is what they call a hidden gem, because this is probably one of my favourite routes, but not many people know about it or actually do it. This road trip takes you on a journey through Northern Ireland’s iconic landscapes.
The flexibility of a converted campervan makes spontaneous stops easy, allowing you to fully enjoy the Giant’s Causeway, the Glens of Antrim, and charming coastal villages.
One of our favourite stops was in the village of Cushendun, where we parked up and explored the nearby caves—an unexpected delight! We also highly recommend stopping at Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge; crossing it is an exhilarating experience with views that are well worth the thrill.

If there ever was a road trip to get custom windows installed this is the one. Northern Ireland’s landscape is very unique and definitely something you’ll want a great view of.
Custom windows are great for taking in the breathtaking views of the coastline and to breath in the summer sea air.
There are definitely remote parts of this route, so if you like to have a morning coffee, watch a film in the evening or charge your phone.
I’d definitely recommend getting a solar panel installed, so you can enjoy the comforts of home while out in the remotest parts of nature.
Snowdonia and North Wales Road Trip
- Route: Conwy to Aberdyfi
- Duration: 3-5 days in campervan
- Distance: 130 miles
In my opinion Snowdonia National Park and North Wales is one of the most unique and beautiful road trips in the UK.
This route offers a fantastic road trip for those who love mountainous landscapes and outdoor adventures, with a huge amount of hiking to be done.
The drive through the park is nothing short of breathtaking, with towering peaks and deep valleys that seem to stretch on forever. We made a point to stop at Pen-y-Pass and hike up Mount Snowdon, which was challenging but incredibly rewarding.
One of the highlights of the trip was visiting Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake), where we set up camp for a night. The lake is serene, and it’s the perfect spot for a bit of kayaking or just relaxing by the water.

Carpet lining
Now honestly we all know the UK can get cold but North Wales is a different gravy, especially in the mountain ranges at night. Getting a diesel heater installed will keep you warm so you can go get cold in the day then come back to a cosy, warm camper in the evening.
If you are planning to do a lot of hiking or rock climbing a pop-top conversion provides extra space for gear and sleeping so I’d recommend getting one before hitting this route.
I’d also suggest getting your van carpet lined, because honestly being cosy, warm and comfortable in your camper is such a great feeling while having a view of the North Welsh countryside. Carpet lining also gives you a layer of insulation against the cold and draft.
The Lake District, North West England
- Route: Kendal to Keswick
- Duration: 3-5 days in campervan
- Distance: 90 miles
Now The Lake District is a classic road trip, but a classic for a reason. It is renowned for its stunning scenery, literary connections, and beautiful lakes and fells.
We strongly recommend visiting Lake Windermere, the largest natural lake in England. We parked the campervan and took a boat ride across the lake, enjoying the serene surroundings and the sight of sailboats drifting lazily by.
The road trip also gave us the perfect opportunity to explore the literary heritage of the area. We visited the homes of Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth.
The narrow, winding roads through these villages add to the charm, making every twist and turn feel like a step back in time.

I’ve had the best time with a pop top conversion in the Lake district as I can really feel free while under the stars camping in what feels like the middle of nowhere. Your trip to the Lake District in a camper won’t be complete without a few nights sleeping in your pop top.
It’s worth knowing many sites and places you’ll stop for the night won’t have power, so I’d recommend you get solar panels installed before this route. You’ll have a way better time being able to relax in the evening by watching a film, having a morning coffee, and having good lighting.
If you wanted the full package I’d even suggest getting an awning, as the Lake District is a great spot for evening BBQs and drinks. You’ll also be able to chill outside undercover if the British weather does the unthinkable and rains in the summer…
The Jurassic Coast, South West England
- Route: Exmouth to Studland Bay
- Duration: 2-4 days in campervan
- Distance: 90 miles
I love this route for a long weekend, being a short drive it’s perfect for a bank holiday weekend or if you wanted to take just a couple days off work. Stretching from Exmouth to Studland Bay, the Jurassic Coast is known for its geological wonders. Explore the cliffs of West Bay, Durdle Door, and Lyme Regis.
One of the highlights of the trip was visiting Durdle Door, the famous natural limestone arch. We parked the campervan and walked down to the beach, where the view of the arch against the blue sea is simply breathtaking. It’s a great spot for a picnic or just to relax and enjoy the sound of the waves.
If you’re planning this road trip, I highly recommend taking your time to explore the lesser-known spots along the way. We stumbled upon a few hidden coves and quieter beaches that were perfect for a peaceful break away. Studland Bay, the final stop on our journey, was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the trip.

Honestly, these coastal views are some of the best you’ll get so make sure you can enjoy them from the comfort of your camper, so having as many windows as you can see from is important, and even a panoramic view would be perfect for this.
The camper community is massive in the south coast of the UK so you’ll have lots of campsite options to stay in. You can compare campervans and pop tops all you want. Also I recommend considering a full kitchen so you can cook whilst looking at this view.
The Peak District, Central England
- Route: Buxton to Bakewell
- Duration: 2-4 days in campervan
- Distance: 50 miles
Some of the best times I’ve had with my family are in the Peak District. This is great for a family who have an interest in the outdoors and want to encourage their kids to appreciate nature and the beauty the UK has to offer. The Peak District offers rolling hills, dramatic dales, and charming villages.
Another must-visit is Chatsworth House, one of the most magnificent stately homes in England. The house itself is stunning, but the surrounding gardens and parklands are what really capture the imagination, with plenty of space for picnics and play.
I ended my trip in Bakewell, a charming village famous for its tarts. The riverside walks here are peaceful and offer a gentle way to wrap up the trip.

Underseat storage
For a road trip like this, a few key campervan features are essential. I recommend having a foldable bike rack so you can bring along bikes to explore some of the Peak District’s many trails.
An onboard heating system is also a must, as the evenings can get quite cool, even in summer. Panoramic windows will let you take in the stunning views as you relax in the campervan, and a compact kitchenette allows you to prepare meals on the go, especially if you want to enjoy a picnic at one of the many scenic spots.
Lastly, good storage solutions are important for keeping everything organised, especially when travelling with kids.
